There have been calls for Luhya Unity from top-ranking Luhya leaders amid the looming General Elections. The Luhya community boasts of numbers and is ranked second as the most populous community according to the 2019 census. The Luhya are divided into sub-communities who in turn have their perceived leaders. It is worth noting that the Mulembe nation have never voted as a block in the past recent elections
ODM leader Raila Odinga brokered a coalition with Luhya Leaders Musalia and Wetangula of ANC and Ford Kenya Parties respectively to form the NASA Coalition. The NASA Coalition scooped almost all seats thanks to the Powerful coalition.
Raila and Musalia have since openly disagreed and are reading from separate scripts with both of having allies in the Western region. Raila enjoys the support of the COTU leader Francis Atwoli, Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya among others while Musalia has formed an alliance with Wetangula who was recently ousted from his own party. The allies of the teams have been doing rounds in Western and holding both private and public meetings to solicit and garner support.
William Ruto has also been making inroads and has been thoroughly doing his campaign silently assisted by former Kakamega Senator Bonni Khalwale and Didymus Barasa. Ruto is beefing up his team and has had meetings with Musalia and Wetangula with the Possibility of working together towards the next General Elections.
Raila is perceived to have a strong following in the Western region and he came victorious in 2013 where Musalia Mudavadi was also a presidential candidate.
The reason for the scramble for Western is primarily because of the numbers factor. Raila has a compact following in Nyanza, Coast, and Nairobi. Musalia has some following in Western while Ruto has a compact following in Rift Valley. This leaves the Central, Western, Eastern and North-Eastern regions for grabs. Westerns are believed to be easily swayed and can easily vote for different individuals.
Whoever will control western, will stand a huge chance at the elections. Raila enjoys massive support at the moment therefore it will be an uphill task to win over his massive and loyal followers.
Western Region might just be the king maker in 2022.
